Tonight’s show is short simple and exact. Ready?

Commandments in the New Testament

The New Testament contains over a thousand commandments. But let me ask you a question? What are the commandments of a Christian?

I want to make this really simple. In Joh 6:28 a group came to Jesus and collectively asked:

“What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?”

And Jesus replied:

You must obey all 1050 commandments found in the New Testament. (beat) NO?

No. This is what Jesus said:

29 “This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.”

Isn’t that radical? Believe on Jesus. Have faith in Jesus.

Those words were given by Jesus to the Jews. Later, Jesus was talking to his apostles and he said this:

John 13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

So from the Father we are told that to do His Works is to believe on His Son. And from the Son we are given a new commandment – to love.

Summary of Commandments

Finally, in the 1st epistle of John, all the commandments are summarized for us by the Apostle Jesus loved, as he writes:

1st John 3:23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

Have you ever had anyone try to give you more commandments than what Jesus and His Apostle John has given here?

More than to believe and to love one another?

They’ll try. They’ll try to step in between you and the Lord you love and trust and tell you what you should be doing, how you should be doing it, and how often.

They’ll condemn you for all sorts of things – almost everything under the sun, you will be convicted. But what does scripture say the commandments are?

BELIEVE ON JESUS AND LOVE AS HE LOVED.
