Faith and Community Gatherings

Calvary Campus – Christian Assemblies Meeting to Prayerfully Understand Scripture – is now underway somewhere near your home (if you live in the SLC area or north).

When? Sunday Mornings at the University of Utah from 9:15 to 10:15 am. Then, we offer three simultaneous services every Sunday night, all from 7pm to 8 pm, all on University Campuses. The first is at the U of U in the Web building – same place as the AM service. The second is at Weber State at the _______________ bldg. Finally, we meet at Utah State at the Nutrition and Science Building (or Aggie Ice Cream Building) at 725 North 12000 East room 202.

Use us as a supplement to your regular church attendance OR as your own special church service. Either way, we go verse by verse through the Bible and then have a Q and A with fellowship. Just come on over and see. (Oh, and relax. If you are LDS come on over and join us – really.) That’s Calvary Campus. Go to www.Calvarycampus.com for more information.

Consider Your Spiritual Path

Your name has been on the records of the institution for God knows how long. You haven’t attended in decades – years – months. You have never really bought into all the shenanigans but you don’t know what else to do. The home teachers keep coming by – or not. The young teens come by to collect an offering every now and again. And over all these years, you sit – still believing in God but not growing in your relationship with Him. What do you do? (Beat) I have a suggestion: (Whisper) Abandon ship!

Write your letter, remove your name, and as Gordon B Hinckley titled his book, “Stand for Something.” Send a message that you want to see some official doctrinal changes. That you want an apology for the blacks and the priesthood, for Mountain Meadows Massacre, for the Pearl of Great Price, their doctrines of salvation, and for being less than upfront with their history and practices. Whatever it is, my friends, go to www.utlm.org or www.bornagainmormon.com, learn how to write the letter, where to send it, and abandon ship!

I had the opportunity to sit down with a teary and joyful couple last week. It seems he has come to a living relationship with the Lord and wants to walk from Mormonism and she, while supportive of his growth and change, is terrified. I understand this situation. What is interesting about it is that this woman expressed the same fears my own wife used to share when I began investigating the LDS Church – "What will happen to our family that has been sealed together for time and all eternity?" they wonder. What will happen to our celestial marriage? Will I be “given” to another worthy man because my husband has decided to… follow Jesus?

If you are also in this situation will you listen to me for a moment?

First of all, we know from scripture that there is no marriage in heaven. Who are you going to believe on this – Jesus or Joseph?

However… what do you suppose God will want for those people who have accepted Him through faith? An eternal existence that is sub-par, lonely, and painful?

Here’s the point – and this is the point of being a believer to begin with – Trust God. Trust Him with the details of your eternal afterlife. In fact, even say to Him: “Lord, I want you to know that I walk by total and complete faith and I am not going to succumb to the man-made fantasies of someone because I want to feel assurance or certainty…” Say: “And so I place all my faith, and trust, and concern, and fears at your feet KNOWING that whatever you have planned for me and my family, we cannot even fathom it.” Okay?

And with this, let’s have a word of prayer:

Tonight I am going to go through and read and respond to the 20 most unusual and interesting emails we have received over the past six months to a year – in descending order – kind of like a Letterman Countdown.
