Faith without religion.
The March 6th Call In Hour
In this episode of the Talk with Shawn McCraney Call-In Show, we tackled a range of topics, from THC use in the Christian life to the cycles of trauma that keep people trapped in religious subcultures. A listener shared their experience with cannabis, and we explored the ways it can, at times, be a tool for relief rather than a spiritual threat—debunking long-held fears pushed by both government propaganda and religious institutions. The discussion emphasized personal discernment, individual reactions, and the difference between using substances responsibly versus being controlled by them. Shawn and Delaney made it clear that it is not a promotion of the
One of the biggest takeaways from this episode was a fascinating insight into “trauma drama”—the phenomenon where people leave controlling religious systems but remain locked in conflict within their former subculture. A research discussion highlighted how ex-Mormons, ex-Jehovah’s Witnesses, and ex-Scientologists all form groups that continue the same patterns of hierarchy, in-fighting, and division that they initially left behind. This realization sheds light on why walking away from religion isn’t enough—real growth comes from breaking free of the mindset, not just the institution.
We also revisited Matthew 28:19 and the origins of the Trinitarian baptismal formula, exploring how early manuscripts suggest this phrase may have been a later addition. Research into early church writings, including Eusebius, indicates that the original baptismal practice may have been in Jesus’ name alone—raising deeper questions about how church doctrine evolved over centuries. This sparked a wider discussion on how the Bible has been translated, manipulated, and used to solidify church structures rather than emphasize faith and freedom.
Additionally, we discussed church culture and its influence on social behaviors, including Utah’s unique approach to traffic laws (or lack thereof) and the ongoing control tactics used in many religious settings. We also touched on the upcoming Cult-Proof Conference, set for September 11, where experts and former members of high-control religious groups will share their insights on faith, freedom, and recovery.
As always, we welcome your thoughts, questions, and challenges. Whether you’re wrestling with doctrine, re-examining church culture, or just looking for a space to grow in faith outside of traditional structures, The Call-In Show is here to foster real conversations. See you next time!
