Faith without religion.
Agape Love: The Heart of Christian Virtue
In a recent teaching, we delved into the profound insights of 1st Corinthians 13, focusing on the essential role of Agape love in the life of a Christian. Paul, in his letter, uses hyperbolic examples to emphasize that even the most esteemed spiritual gifts, such as prophecy, knowledge, and faith, are meaningless without Godly love. This love, unlike other forms, is not based on feelings but is a deliberate choice, a decision to act in accordance with God’s principles and promises.
Paul’s message challenges the common notion that faith is the pinnacle of Christian virtues. While faith is indeed crucial, as it is the foundation upon which Christianity stands, Paul argues that without love, even faith that can move mountains is nothing. This highlights the eternal nature of love, which surpasses even faith.
Agape love is characterized by goodwill, selflessness, and action. It exists in opposition to our natural inclinations, requiring us to choose love over resentment or anger. This choice is rooted in faith—trusting in God’s commands and promises. For instance, God commands us to forgive, promising forgiveness in return. If we believe in this promise, we choose to forgive, demonstrating Godly love.
Paul further illustrates the nature of Agape love by describing its attributes: it is patient, kind, not envious, not boastful, and not proud. It does not dishonor others, is not self-seeking, and is not easily angered. It keeps no record of wrongs, does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, trusts, hopes, and perseveres. This love never fails.
In essence, Agape love is a verb, an action that transcends feelings. It is the conscious decision to act in love, even when it is difficult. This teaching reminds us that true Godly love is not about what we feel but about what we choose to do, reflecting the love of Christ in our interactions with others. As we continue to explore 1st Corinthians 13, we are encouraged to embody this love in our daily lives, allowing it to guide our actions and relationships.
